Don Olsen is an associate at Luftman, Heck & Associates, and works with our Columbus criminal defense attorneys to help people across Central Ohio with OVI, traffic, and other criminal charges. He was previously the Assistant District Attorney in Dane County, WI and served as an Assistant City Attorney in Columbus. With his extensive trial background and experience as a prosecutor, Mr. Olsen began focusing on criminal defense, earning distinction as an authority in OWI law and procedure.
Attorney Olsen attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he studied political science and philosophy. From there, he went onto University of Wisconsin Law School, where he would eventually serve as an adjunct professor.
He began his legal career working as an intern then a volunteer attorney acting as an Assistant District Attorney in Dane County, Wisconsin. Here, he made various court appearances, including motion hearings and jury trials. He eventually became the Assistant District Attorney in Dane County, and handled a traffic and misdemeanor caseload of over 300 cases. In April of 2015, he opened his own criminal defense law firm in Columbus, Ohio, where he focused on all levels of OVI defense.
His criminal defense acumen eventually led him to the Columbus City Attorney’s Office, where he served as an Assistant City Attorney. Through this position, he handled a caseload of over 400 traffic matters and misdemeanors cases, worked 23 jury trials, and familiarized himself with Franklin County Municipal Court’s procedures. It was also during this time that attorney Olsen completed the standard training for OVI 1, OVI 2, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement training, and Driving Impaired Criminal Enforcement training. After completion of these courses, he has returned as a guest lecturer on numerous occasions assisting in the training of law enforcement for both Columbus Police Department and any and all agencies that attend training with the Ohio Highway Patrol Academy.
In addition to his extensive training, attorney Olsen has presented as an instructor for continuing legal education courses on the topic of expert testimony during OVI cases at the Ohio Municipal Attorney’s Association. During his time at the City of Columbus, he was also responsible for training newer attorneys in various aspects of criminal law – including instruction on OVI prosecution in the city.
In his spare time, attorney Olsen enjoys working on home DIY projects of varying magnitudes.
